Two Hearts for Lacy
Late one evening in the winter of 2007, I was researching the topic of "police impersonators" for an article I was writing. After reading numerous stories about criminals impersonating the police to rob, assault, rape and murder innocent victims, I came upon the 2 Hearts 4 Lacy website. I learned that in 2003, Lacy Jo Miller, a 20-year-old University of Northern Colorado student, was senselessly murdered by a police impersonator in Fort Collins, CO. Since then, her mother, Wendy Cohen, has worked relentlessly to build Two Hearts: The Lacy Jo Miller Foundation (501c3 non-profit).
The goal of the foundation is violence prevention, safety awareness, restorative justice and support for survivors on both sides of violent crimes.
I was profoundly saddened by the story of Lacy's murder, but at the same time, inspired by the life that Lacy lived. At the time, Wendy Cohen was in the process of planning the Amazing Women's Safety Awareness Conference and I thought, "I would love to be involved with this. I should write...". It was late at night and I told myself I would contact Mrs. Cohen the next day. I turned off my computer and left the office, but I was drawn back. I felt a strong connection to Mrs. Cohen and her vision. I turned the computer on and wrote her a message that included my feelings about Lacy as well as my desire to help with the Amazing Women's Safety Awareness Conference.
After some e-mail correspondence, Wendy and I met and found we shared the same ambitions and dreams. We speak together regularly and are currently working on several projects including initiatives to prevent crimes committed by police impersonators. I encourage you to visit the 2 Hearts 4 Lacy website to learn more about this incredible foundation. You will be inspired!

I normally offer a discount to military families, but beginning May 1, 2011, I am going to offer my seminars free of charge for immediate family members of active military personnel. To honor my friend, I will extend this offer until his safe return.
One our close friends serves his country, both as a police officer and member of the United States Army. He's getting ready to deploy for the third time in just a few years, this time to Afghanistan, and he asked us to look after his wife while he is gone. Of course we feel it is the least we can do to thank his family for their sacrifice and service. I believe we owe it to our troops to make sure their families are protected while they are away...protecting us.
